Remember Doordarshan’s uneasy foray into late-night erotic programming in the late ‘80s? In terms of aesthetic, Hindi pulp fiction was a bit like that. Sharma made this world his own - in which murder, mystery, erotica and masculinity all came together. Pulp fiction means many things to many people. And on 17 February 2017, it received yet another blow when one of its most suucessful authors, Ved Prakash Sharma, passed away.
Just two-and-a-half decades later, its world would be shrinking. The ‘90s, when Hindi pulp fiction was huge, and its popularity seemingly on an endless rise.
